The committee examined the scale and quality of end of life care; the current and future approach to commissioning and funding of services; and the capability and capacity of NHS and social care staff to provide such care.

The Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme is cited in the report as an example of good practice.

Marie Curie Cancer Care Chief Executive Thomas Hughes-Hallett said: “Marie Curie Cancer Care welcomes the Public Accounts Committee report on End of Life Care recognising the need for better end of life care services.

“This report again highlights the need for better end of life care, noting that it is still a fact that the majority of people who are terminally ill would like to die at home or in a hospice, but the majority still die in hospital, often unnecessarily and in the place they least want to be.

“We are pleased with the specific recommendation that Primary Care Trusts must show that the additional funding made available for end of life care has not been diverted to other areas.

“Marie Curie Cancer Care is working in collaboration with others to help bridge gaps in end of life care provision. Our Delivering Choice Programme has shown that with the right local leadership and agencies, – health and social care working together- the numbers of people able to die at home can be doubled at no net cost, avoiding needless deaths in hospital.

“We hope this PAC report further helps to encourage the right change to turn the government’s End of Life Care strategy into reality.”
