Mark Girvan, Julie Dixon and Sara Woolley at the
launch of the project
The project has started its second phase, developing service improvement proposals alongside local partners after completing a comprehensive review of current end of life care services in the area.
There is a high level of local support and willingness to improve services for patients and carers, and this is supported by a regional health agenda which prioritises end of life care.
While several areas for improvement have been identified, it is important to note that there are numerous examples of best practice and dedicated staff across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear that are already providing compassionate, high quality palliative care.
Jackie Park, Associate Director of Acute Services Commissioning and Performance Management, and commissioning lead for end of life care at NHS South of Tyne and Wear said: "The project's phase I report has been produced following considerable work with patients and their families, and a wide range of staff to get their views on the current provision of services.
“We are building on significant local commitment and interest, and working in close partnership with organisations involved in the planning and delivery of end of life services. This is to ensure that the right services are available at the right time for patients, their families and carers."
