John

72, from Boston Lincolnshire, died at home in March 2006

DCP patient John March 2006John had prostate cancer and, towards the end of his life, he had to spend three weeks in hospital. It was really important to him to get home where he could sleep with his wife, in their bed. Thanks to the Rapid Response Team he was able to spend the last two weeks of his life at home, where he wanted to be.

John’s wife didn’t want all night nursing but she still needed support and guidance. The Rapid Response Team visited John and his wife every evening at 10pm to settle him down and, every other night, the team called at 3am to help control his pain and make sure he was comfortable.

John’s wife said:

“You don’t really know what to do so it was just very consoling that you know the team was there at the end of the phone, I was flabbergasted by the service.”

With the help and support of the Rapid Response Team, John achieved the home death so important to him.
